NO DUMPING

We are lucky enough to have some wooded areas in our community. AND we are lucky enough to have a very generous trash pick up system. PLEASE do not dump your refuse in the woods.  If you feel like branches and leaves can go back to nature – then don’t envelope them in a non-biodegradable tarp. If you have large trash to get rid of, such as a carpet, there is a special day for that in the Bowie Trash Pickup Schedule.

For those of you that need a reminder:

Refuse :
Refuse (garbage) is collected twice weekly within the city limits as per the refuse and recycling schedule.

Refuse includes :

  • Desks – wood
  • Furniture (regardless of size)
  • Household trash and garbage
  • Mattresses and box springs
  • Paint cans (empty or dried out paint only)
  • Rugs and carpets (cut into 4 feet lengths, tied or taped in rolls)
  • Sliding glass doors w/glass
  • Windows
  • Wood tables
  • Firewood
  • Chain link fence fabric/chicken wire
  • Scrap wood and branches larger than 3 inches in diameter (must be no longer thatn 4 feet and be tied securely or placed in boxes or cans)

The following items are not permitted and will not be picked up with regular trash:

  • Bags and containers over 50 lbs.
  • Car parts
  • Commerical products
  • Concrete & bricks
  • Dirt
  • Hazardous waste
  • Liquid paint
  • Mulch
  • Rocks
  • Sod
  • Stumps larger than 6 inches in diameter
  • Tires (requires a special pick-up)

All refuse should be placed in containers and / or bagged or boxed. Refuse must be placed at the curb for collection no later than 7 a.m. the morning of collection but no earlier than the evening prior to collection.

Recycling
The city collects recycling at curbside once weekly. Glass, metal, plastics, and paper go in blue recycling bins or carts and are picked up on your scheduled day. All recycling must be at the curb by 7 a.m. View a list of items that can be recycled.

 

 

SPECIAL PICK UPS

Collections are done on Wednesdays and must be scheduled. To schedule a pick-up, call the Public Works Department by Tuesday at noon for that week’s pick up at 301-809-2344.

Metal Items
Items that are at least 98% metal require a special pick-up. Metal items include the following:

  • Dryers, microwaves, stoves, ovens
  • Grills (no propane tanks)
  • Metal cabinets or shelves
  • Refrigerators and freezers (make sure door is removed or securely tied closed)
  • Washing machines, dishwashers
  • Water heaters
  • Metal furniture
  • Furnaces, air conditioners
  • Metal fence posts (chain link fabric & chicken wire are regular trash)

Tires
Tires also require a special pickup. Residents may have up to four automobile tires collected each year. No commercial tires will be collected.

Vacuum Cleaners and all sizes of televisions are regular trash.
